Exposition
Une présence mystérieuse connue sous le nom de "L'Autre" charge Loki de sécuriser "Le Tesseract" de la Terre.
Incident incitatif
Loki arrive au S.H.I.E.L.D. (application de la loi mondiale), qui est une organisation dirigée par Nick Fury et supervisée par Clint Barton (Hawkeye). Après une bataille mineure, Loki retourne Clint contre le S.H.I.E.L.D., puis vole et s'échappe avec le Tesseract.
Terrain Bâtiment Un
Natasha Romanoff, alias Black Widow, est appelée au S.H.I.E.L.D. où l'agent Coulson lui demande de retrouver Bruce Banner (le Hulk) alors qu'il dit qu'il trouvera Tony Stark (Iron Man.)

Natasha trouve Banner en Inde et lui demande de l'aider à retrouver le Tesseract. Coulson plante le rendez-vous du dîner de Stark et implore son aide pour maîtriser Loki. Fury rencontre Steve Rogers (Captain America) et l'informe de la menace.
L'action en hausse
Steve, Natasha et Tony interceptent Loki lors d'un gala, puis le dieu nordique du tonnerre Thor se présente et dit qu'il a des affaires inachevées avec Loki. Il y a une bataille mais finalement Loki est capturé et ramené au S.H.I.E.L.D. héli-HQ.
Milieu
Avec Loki en captivité, Fury se concentre sur la recherche du Tesseract. Tony tente de pirater le S.H.I.E.L.D. système parce qu'il ne fait pas confiance à Fury.
Retombées médianes
Barton mène une mission de sauvetage sur l'héli-HQ, dans laquelle Banner perd le contrôle et se transforme en Hulk. Loki s'échappe après avoir poignardé l'agent Coulson. "Les Vengeurs" survivent tous, et Fury dit qu'ils seront prêts à défendre la Terre la prochaine fois qu'une menace extraterrestre émergera pour détruire la Terre.
Dénouement

Non non non, ce n'est pas possible. Pourquoi? Comment cela a-t-il traversé tant d'étapes de réécritures? Fournir une exposition, ou la trame de fond des personnages, à travers le dialogue n'est pas une mauvaise idée, mais cela ne devrait jamais être fait entre les deux personnages impliqués dans la trame de fond.
Si Steve disait : « Qu'est-il arrivé à ton frère ? et Thor a répondu "Je le pensais mort", ce serait une chose. Ce n'est toujours pas génial, mais c'est plus dramatique que Thor et Loki se crient une exposition l'un à l'autre.
