The Benefits of Participating in the Arts:

Participating in the arts has a lot of benefits, especially for students studying complex topics.

Armstrong says, “From what I’ve read in my studies, the pathways enhance memory and retention because they’re firing on both sides. Recall gets strengthened through performance and music.”

There are currently about 275 students involved in the music programs at Mines, which is about 10% of the total student population. According to the National Association for Music Education, students involved with music perform better academically showing an average of 101-point improvement in SAT scores.

Creativity and STEM:

By incorporating art and creativity into STEM education, SD Mines is helping to create well-rounded graduates who can not only solve problems but also think creatively.

Armstrong states, “By growing these problem-solving [skills] and these solutions in something that to them seems very not STEM, they’re actually strengthening all their problem-solving and other things in STEM.”
